So we introduce you to Bowerbird, the collective venture of sisters-in law Laura and Kate Roebuck who are artists who “dabble in too many things”. Their website shows you a representation of their work, and they are also on etsy with colorful rather whimsical jewelry and hand-painted totes. The sister act does abstracts and drawings. Each year, the festival showcases jazz legends and exciting new talent in venues throughout Atlanta during the entire month of May, culminating with three days in beautiful Piedmont Park over Memorial Day weekend. The Festival weekend includes performances by winners of our Youth Jazz Band Competition, jazz education workshops, interactive kidzone and eco village and two stages featuring jazz for all.

With summer in view, perhaps you are thinking about a new hair do. If your long locks are feeling tired, then maybe you should go short – really short. We told you about the Karlie, but the latest look is the pixie a la French actress Jean Seberg and sported by Charlize Theron at the Oscars. Anne Hathaway is also wearing cropped locks these days. It started on the runway with the models at Dior Couture in polished pixies. Marc Jacobs also had his models in cropped hair at his fall fashion show. There are two versions of the look – more polished like Dior or more punk like Jacobs. So even though short, you can still have some variation with your look. Obviously this hairdo takes some guts, but hey nothing risked, nothing gained!

Alex City Jazz Fest 2013

For 23 years, the Alexander City Jazz Fest Committee has presented a variety of performers during a two-day, free outdoor event held each June. Past performers have included: Zac Brown Band, Joe Bonamassa, Randall Bramblett Band, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Kelley Hunt, Delbert McClinton, the Los Lonely Boys, Taj Mahal, Bela Fleck, Dr. John, and Jon Cleary, plus many other outstanding entertainers. Over the years, the Jazz Fest has earned the reputation of one of the best run events in the state of Alabama. A total of over 10,000 attend the free two-day concert.

This years Jazz Fest will be on June 7th and 8th at Strand Park. Performers will include Davin McCoy & The Coming Attractions, Chubby Carrier & The Bayou Swamp People, The New Orleans Suspects, Marc Broussard and more!

Viva Health Starlight Gala

The Viva Health Starlight Gala, Birmingham’s crown jewel of performing arts events, benefits the programs and education initiatives of UAB’s Alys Stephens Center. This year the ASC presents one of the most dynamic couples of American music: country and bluegrass star Vince Gill and contemporary Christian and mainstream pop vocalist Amy Grant.

A member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry, Gill has sold more than 26 million albums and won 20 Grammy Awards (the most of any male artist) and 18 Country Music Association Awards, including two for Entertainer of the Year. Grant has sold more than 30 million albums and won six Grammy Awards in many categories. She started her career as a Christian music artist in the mid-1980s, completing a successful crossover to mainstream pop in the early ’90s but never forsaking her gospel roots. Married since 2000, the pair has two of the purest, loveliest voices in music today.

SliceFest 2013

SliceFest offers non-stop family fun from noon to 4:00 pm and a jammin’ party on through the night. Kids can have their own fun by playing on the moon bounce, getting their faces painted and choosing a balloon animal, while the adults enjoy beer samplings paired with Slice’s unique pizzas at ‘The Beer Experience.’ The aroma of fresh stone pizzas will be floating around and the beer will be flowing all day as guests can purchase Slice’s mouth-watering pies, paired perfectly with local brews.

Bob Sykes BBQ and Blues Festival

The 4th Annual Bob Sykes BBQ and Blues Festival will be held on Saturday, June 1st at the beautiful DeBardeleben Park located in downtown historic Bessemer from 1:00 – 9:00 pm.
